If you’ve spent any time in the hills, on the farm, or around a Swazi stand at an event, there’s a fair chance you’ve met Josh Murray – better known as Muzz.

“I’ve been a long-term user of Swazi and a big fan of the brand,” says Muzz. “I reckon it’s like the Toyota Hilux of outdoor clothing – reliable and will get you out of any tricky situation in the bush.”

From his early days in the New Zealand Army, when a Swazi camo rain jacket was “a soldier’s most sought-after bit of kit,” to countless years hunting, shooting, and farming, Muzz has always had a few core pieces of Swazi gear in his arsenal.

These days, he’s based in the Manawatu with his wife on a small dry stock farm. “When I’m not working, you’ll find me on the farm or in the hills chasing game – and occasionally putting out the odd YouTube video,” he says.

Check out Muzz's YouTube channel here.

From the Army to the Hills

Muzz spent 12 years in the NZDF, where he learned the value of good gear in tough environments. Hunting was already in his blood, and over the years he’s chased game all over New Zealand – and even further afield.

“When I left the army, I was mostly working overseas and took the opportunity to organise a bit of hunting in Europe and South Africa. I even spent four days trying to shoot a seal in Finland – but they know the game up there. No seals were harmed, and I had to settle for a couple of whitetail deer and some bird shooting.”

Until recently, Muzz was also involved in firearms safety education, running licensing courses across the North Island. “It’s been great seeing all the new hunters coming through, getting licensed, and diving straight into their hunting and shooting.”

Life with Swazi

Muzz joined the Swazi team at the start of the year, getting stuck into testing and developing new gear, as well as connecting with retailers around the North Island.

“Visiting all the best outdoors shops in NZ is a dangerous game for me – I never know what I might be coming home with,” he laughs. “If you’re reading this on the Swazi website, check out our retailer map and find your local store.”

You’ll be seeing plenty more of Muzz on our socials, so if you spot him at an event or in-store, make sure to say hi.

Muzz’s Top Gear Picks

“I got asked to recommend some gear, so here are a few of my current favourites,” says Muzz:

The Mackenzie“A great warm thick jersey for on the farm or wearing to town. Woollen outer with a possum/wool inner, designed and made in NZ.”

The Wapiti XP“Detachable hood, shotgun cartridge pockets, two-way full-length zip. I haven’t had mine long, but it’s already my go-to when I’m out on the farm or shooting birds.”

Steevo’s Pants“I never thought I was a fleece pant guy, but these are great. Sitting on a wet quad bike without getting a wet backside – dream result.”
