What Is The Roar?
The Roar is the heartbeat of the New Zealand hunting calendar. Every autumn, as late March rolls into April, red stags across the country begin their annual rut. The bush comes alive with deep, echoing calls as mature stags challenge rivals and gather hinds. It’s raw, loud, unpredictable — and for many hunters, it’s the most exciting time of the year to be in the hills. During the Roar, stags are more vocal, more active and more visible.
